AFTER:
Kevin “Rock” Oropeza made his entrance into the world on September 28, 1970, with a birth that set the tone for his childhood…and his life.
Born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester, PA to a 20-year-old mother in the throes of battle with addiction and a 22-year-old father who was too busy partying with the Pagan Motorcycle Club’s president to attend the birth of his son, Kevin’s difficulties had just begun. By the age of three, he showed signs of hyperactivity – a “condition” which his father controlled by administering marijuana to his toddler, making a decision that would alter the child’s mind, body and spirit and sentencing Kevin to a life of endless challenges.
On November 18, 1992, those struggles culminated when Kevin Oropeza was sentenced to natural life without parole plus 41 years imprisonment, after being found guilty of two counts of possession of a deadly weapon, conspiracy and the first-degree murder of a member of the Pagans. At just 22 years old, it seemed this young man’s tale had already been written.
But this was only the beginning of Kevin’s story, a story he has rewritten by embracing life’s lessons and discovering his purpose.
Kevin has set out on a mission to candidly share the adversities he has faced in hopes of saving others from enduring a similar life of pain which resulted from drug use, street life and violence. From his domicile at the James T. Vaughn Correction Center in Smyrna, DE, he channels his experiences in the School of Hard Knocks to warn others about the perils of succumbing to poor decisions by offering life coaching to younger inmates entering the prison as well as by seeking to deter those who may be in danger of following in his footsteps through visits to adjudicated youth and those in various community programs.
Join Kevin as he intentionally claws his way from the pits of incarcerated Hell to a path of realization and self-discovery that offers an insightful case study into the circumstances and conditions that robbed him of his innocence, casting him from childhood into an early adulthood, and ultimately labeling him a “State Baby.”
This journey is not for the faint of heart as Kevin boldly articulates his painful past in graphic detail, but those brave enough to engage with Kevin’s story will find valuable, life-changing solutions to overcome the misfortunates of any environment and aid in the nurturing and healing of children. State Baby is a jolting, yet profoundly moving, narrative of a young man’s life and examines Kevin’s refusal to be restricted to the confines of his purgatory.
